As I was doing this project, I kept on having the image of my mom telling our family friends: "Emilie is crazy she thinks math is beautiful" to which I would reply something along the lines of "it is, just look at these patterns" or "look at these beautiful findings" or something along those lines. I think this project just really just confirmed those beliefs for me. This project also makes me a little bit jealous that I never really experienced something this open-ended in math class. The math projects that we were so often given were often tightly constrained to the curriculum. I suppose this is a math curriculum course, but I think that forcing student creativity when combined with math into even more stringent constraints, almost just drains the artistic purpose and fun out of it.
I really enjoyed exploring my art piece and my classmates' art work. Some of them were just so mesmerizing and I think that it is incredible that math was the inspiration for these art pieces. Going back to the statement that my mom sometimes says, I almost feel a little bit disappointed that math is often not recognized for its beauty and ways that it connects people. The connection I felt to my peers was another benefit I found in this project. I loved being able to explore, contribute, and learn together through the art presentations this week. It really felt like going to an interactive math art museum. I really appreciated it.
