Final Reflection for EDCP 342

When I look back on this course, I find myself reflecting on what pedagogy looks like in a 21st century math classroom. Looking at the blog posts, I find myself drawn to the Battleground Schools article. I cannot stop thinking about the polarized opinions that so many math classroom tend to hold and where I fit into these opinions as a math educator. I kind of enjoy thinking about these difficult problems of the math classroom. On the other hand, I think I have learnt some techniques that are pretty much unanimously consider good teaching practices, well maybe not totally unanimously but I think many ideas are very much well respected by most math educator. For example, many of the ideas from Liljedahl's thinking classroom are inspiration for my future classroom. I am also intrigue with the idea of expanding problems and trying help students find their flow.

During my practicum, and when I am employed as a teacher, I want to look back on many of these ideas and see how my practice algins with them, and continue to seek improvement.

I found that this class was generally jammed packed with information on math pedagogy, maybe almost to a fault. In terms of how this course could be improved, I think the answer is similar to what I have written in my final reflection for 442 in that I did find the blogs to be quite time consuming, and at times high-cost, low-reward, of course it becomes difficult to label what blog posts were most helpful for each individual. Another idea, in particular to this class, it would have been nice to have a chance to explicitly practice some of the ideas that we had learnt. There were so many ideas that were demonstrated to us, but we never were really explicitly required to try to lead them ourselves. Although we did have our microteachings, I think there was so much we learnt after the fact and not a lot of time to practice or observe our classmates. Overall though, I am incredibly thankful for what I have learnt in this class and very much look forward to having the chance to practice the theory of it in my classroom.
