Presentation

  • Combinations

    • Combinations is about finding the number of different ways to group some collection of things

    • Use {1,2,34} as an example and pick 3. Highlight that orders does not matter so {1,2,3}={3,2,1}

    • Combinations are written as nCr where choose r things from n objects

    • Formula is n!/r!(n-r)!

    • Thinking about picking teams, picking a random set of numbers

  • Give the formula, but encourage them to think about it later

Practice and Production

  • Split into 2 Groups

  • Have students work on first problem and work on it:

  1. Suppose we have three identical toys and we want to give them away to two girls and one boy (one toy per child). The children will be selected from four boys and six girls. In how many ways can this be done?

  2. You have 100 non-distinct loonies and 10 people. How many ways can you split the 100 loonies among all 10 people assuming everyone gets at least one loonie?

Closure

  • Go over first problem solution and leave the second problem with them
