Giant Soup Can of Hornby Island - Solving the Problem

Here is my written solution to the problem:

I found myself mainly getting stuck at the estimation techniques and the research component. I honestly kind of "gave up" a little bit on the research stage and I opted for an educated guess. As a student, I found that this problem was frustrating due to the lack of information given. I was often thinking what would the teacher want me to do? Is it what I am thinking reasonable?

As a teacher, I think I like the skills that this assignment required of my student. Although I may worry that students could possibly become annoyed. However, I think that this type of problem helps students practice math as they would in real life. We usually use estimation, reasoning, and research in real life calculations and that was what required here. I think it also exercised some aspects of SEL in that it can be a little tough to do these practices with only the motivation of wanting to solve the problem. Especially with math, where there is usually "one right answer".

I think if I were to help my student with this problem I may scaffold them through the steps. I would encourage them to persevere through their frustration and consider the purpose of their thinking.

Another thing that I want to add is that I found that making a real life problem in a new scenario a little bit difficult. I suppose especially since I was trying to find something "unique" to BC. You'll see the problem I came up with in the
